Program Chair Report

1995-1996

The BPG Session took place on Saturday 15 June. The day began with a breakfast business meeting (at 7:45 a.m.). A luncheon and reception were also scheduled for the same day. All were ticketed events. Members signed up for the respective events on the general conference registration form. The menu and related arrangements for the breakfast and luncheon were skillfully organized by Betty Fiske, Assistant Program Chair. Vegetarians and carnivores alike were satisfied with palatable choices. Breakfast was free to BPG members; the cost for the luncheon was $13.

Program Chair Sarah Melching planned the reception with the help of the local arrangements committee, Dave Harvey and Pam Randolph. Unfortunately, the number of reservations was limited to 80. The reception was held at the historic Moses Myers House. Palettes, the catering service affiliated with the Chrysler Museum, prepared refreshments. Hors d'oeuvres, white wine and soft drinks were served. The cost of the reception was $8 to BPG members; this included a complimentary glass of wine. Virginia Overland Bus Service provided continuous shuttle service between the Moses Myers House and the Marriott Conference Center. The cost of catering was $800; bus service was $90.

A total of twenty-one abstracts were received. Of those, fourteen were selected to be included in the Book and Paper Group Session at the Annual Conference in Norfolk, VA.. Among those not selected was one abstract, submitted by Hanna Szcepanowska. It was referred to the Photographic Materials Group. Another submitted by Francesca Comancini and Paloma Mujica of Chile was referred to the Poster Session. Both referrals were successfully placed. Susan Campion, one of the selected speakers, unfortunately had to withdraw due to unforeseen personal obligations. As a result, thirteen papers were included in the final program schedule, and hopefully all will be published in Volume 15 of the BPG Annual.

All thirteen presentations were delivered at the conference. The program was divided into two sessions. The morning session began at 9:15 a.m.; the afternoon session ran from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Lunchtime (12:10 - 1:25) divided the two sessions. Each session included a coffee break. Breaktimes coincided with the other specialty session groups. The AIC Office organized the breaks. Sarah Melching chaired the morning session; Betty Fiske chaired in the afternoon. A Pocahantas doll presided throughout the session as mascot, helping to keep the program on schedule --or reasonably so. An informal Tips Session followed the scheduled papers. Approximately ten tips were delivered.

The Library Collection Conservation Discussion Group held a separate session titled, "Blue Skying LCCDG." This took place on Thursday 13 June, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
