Horblit Collection of Early Photography

The Department of Printing & Graphic Arts of the Houghton Library, Harvard University, is planning an exhibition opening and symposium to take place at the Houghton Library in Cambridge on the days just prior to the PMG meeting -- Wednesday, March 10 to Thursday March 11, 1999. The Houghton Library is located inside Harvard Yard, easily accessible by subway or car. Click for a map and directions.

The Houghton Library at Harvard University will also host a reception for the members of the Photo Materials Group on Friday, March 12 at 6:00 PM. The exhibition, Salts of Silver, Toned with Gold: an Exhibition of the Harrison D. Horblit Collection of Early Photography will be open for viewing.  The local arrangements committee is grateful to William Stoneman, Librarian of the Houghton Library and Curators Anne Anninger and Julie Melby for this generous invitation.

The Houghton Library celebrations will focus on the Harrison D. Horblit Collection of Early Photography with an exhibition opening scheduled for Wednesday, March 10. This premier collection of over 7,000 items (including daguerreotypes, photographic prints, books illustrated with original photographs, early photographic albums, cameras, glass-plate negatives, and manuscripts) documents the discovery of photography from the 1830s through the turn of the century. Twelve panelists will speak over two days, Wednesday, March 10 and Thursday, March 11, on issues concerning 19th century photography. No registration will be necessary.
