2007 PMG Winter Meeting, Rochester, NY

The Winter Meeting was held February 22-24, 2007 at the George Eastman House. The PMG met jointly with our equivalent group in the International Council of Museums – Conservation Committee, the Working Group Photographic Materials (ICOM-CC WGPM). Attendance was high at 160 total participants. Highlights of the busy meeting included:
• A special daylong session on the "Care and Conservation of Photographic Negatives and Film," organized and coordinated by the PMG Program Chair Laura Downey Staneff
• A special session on “Composite Photographs” organized by the ICOM-CC WGPM Coordinators Clara von Waldthausen and Angeletta Leggio
• A panel presentation on "Cold Storage Projects: Past, Present and Future" with Andrew Robb, Lee Ann Daffner, Clara von Waldthausen, and Sue Bigelow
• An open house given by the Advanced Residency Program in Photographs Conservation at the George Eastman House (ARP)
• Tours of several facilities at the Rochester Institute of Technology, including the Image Permanence Institute (IPI) and the Munsell Color Laboratory
• A special award to Peter Krause for his contributions to the PMG and the preservation of photographs

 


The success of the meeting was due to the efforts of numerous individuals and groups, including:
• Stacey Vandenburgh, Manager of the ARP and the Local Arrangements Committee
• An excellent roster of speakers assembled by Laura Downey Staneff, Clara von Waldthausen, and Angeletta Leggio
• Jim M. Reilly and Grant Romer, Co-Directors of the ARP
• The Fellows and staff of the ARP
• Peter Mustardo of The Better Image, Doug Munson of the Chicago Albumen Works, Mike Specht of Spectra Services, and Mark and France Scully Osterman, whose generous donations helped significantly to defray the costs of the conference
• 2005 – 2007 PMG Officers: Marc Harnly, Chair, Dana Hemmenway, Secretary/Treasurer, and Laura Downey Staneff, Program Chair

Future PMG Meetings

PMG will hold sessions during the next Annual AIC Meeting in Denver, Colorado, April, 2008. The theme of this AIC meeting is “Creative Collaborations” and information on registration is available at http://aic.stanford.edu/meetings/index.html. Updates on the PMG sessions will be forthcoming here at the PMG website, through Listserv, and in future Specialty Group columns of the AIC Newsletter.
The 2009 PMG Winter Meeting will be held at the Center for Creative Photography (CCP) at the University of Arizona in Tucson; dates yet to be determined. Information on the CCP can be found at http://www.creativephotography.org/
